STORY OF REDEMPTION (CALLA LILIES)

My last three paintings have been so detailed and utilizing small brushes. I was
ready to go bold and big with a 22x 32 decaled edge painting of calla lilies that I
photographed in Italy in 2009. In order to get a brighter outline of the calla lilies I
adjusted the background and was surprised to see this amazing color contrast. I
decided to try something different. It feels like a blend of stain glass (with the
masking) meets watercolor. In most of my paintings I use a process called “glazing”
where a light color is added “wet on dry.”  The only place on this painting where I
did that was at the very final process where I glazed Chinese white over the lilies
to give them the texture I was looking for.
If you look at the progression page, you will notice I painted the background first.
I mixed several paints on my palette and as I added them to the paper I let them
“bleed” into each other letting the paint mix and blend creating some very
interesting leaves.
Every time I sit and look at this painting I see something new, something exciting
and different.
