| KULA BOTANICAL GARDEN KOI While visiting Maui in December of 2008 at the crack of dawn, while my family remained sleeping and Spokane continued to receive record snowfall, I was enjoying the 20 acre botanical garden which surprisingly had a huge koi pond where I spent the majority of my time. I found this interesting, because I thought I was there for the flowers. The leaves in the top right corner are really what got me originally excited about this piece. I loved the contrast in color and there are those incredible purples, blues and greens I could not resist. I used salt on the drying yellow/orange paint of the fish to give the “scale” effect. The biggest challenge was the reflections in the water and getting the fish to look like they were UNDER the water! |
